The **ribosome** is the machine that builds every protein in the cell, reading messenger RNA and joining amino acids in the order it encodes. Most of its mass is RNA, and the RNA itself carries out the chemistry. This model shows the complete bacterial 70S ribosome from *E. coli*, with its small (30S) and large (50S) subunits. Ribosome structures earned Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas Steitz and Ada Yonath the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and many antibiotics work by blocking the ribosome. #…
