**Ferritin** is the protein cage that stores iron inside cells, keeping it safe and available. Twenty-four identical subunits assemble into a hollow sphere that can hold thousands of iron atoms. This structure shows apoferritin, the empty cage, solved by cryo-electron microscopy at 1.25 Å in 2020.
