I've got a few of the Chirp plant moisture monitors around the place but I've noticed that over time the metal battery clips tend to get forced off of the PCB on one side by the pressure of the battery, especially if using larger sized batteries. Once that happens the battery doesn't make good contact any more and the Chirp fails to sound when the plant is getting dry.
