A set of three fossil belemnite guards in different lengths. Each is a smooth, bullet-shaped rod with a blunt end marked by a short groove, tapering to a rounded point. Belemnites were squid-like animals that lived in Jurassic and Cretaceous seas. The solid guard, or rostrum, at the back of the body is the part usually preserved, and these bullet-shaped fossils are common on beaches and in clay pits, where they were once known as thunderbolts.
