Six minarets, a cascade of domes and more than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles inside: the mosque that gave Istanbul its most famous silhouette. Sultan Ahmed I commissioned the mosque in 1609, when he was nineteen, and his architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa, a pupil of the great Mimar Sinan, finished it in 1616, facing Hagia Sophia across the old Hippodrome.
