brownies mythology

In English and Scottish folklore, brownies (or broonies) are mythical creatures that act as household spirits, similar to the Lares of ancient Roman tradition. They are considered hardworking and good-natured, yet extremely quick-tempered, sprites that live secretly in houses and barns. They are shy creatures that avoid human contact. They come out only at night, when everyone is asleep, to clean the fireplace, tidy the house, tend to the animals, or perform farm work.
