The Colca Canyon in southern Peru is one of the deepest canyons on Earth — roughly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. Carved by the Colca River through the Andes near Arequipa, its walls drop about 3,270 metres at the deepest point. The canyon is famous for the Andean condors that soar on its morning thermals, best watched from the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, while terraced fields on its slopes have been farmed since pre-Inca times.
