El Coco - bogeyman

The Myth of the "Bogeyman" (Folk Tradition): In Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking cultures (Spain, Portugal, and Latin America), *El Coco* is the equivalent of our "Bogeyman." His purpose: Parents traditionally use his name in lullabies or warnings to get naughty children to eat their meals or go to sleep, telling them that "if they don't go to sleep, *El Coco* will come and take them away."
