A handleless, mushroom-shaped vessel: a wide rounded body with a short upright rim sits on a narrow stem that swells into a tall, rounded foot. Hollow, open top. The psykter was a Greek wine cooler. Filled with wine, it was floated in a krater of cold water or snow so the tall hollow foot kept it upright while the wine chilled.
