Everything begins after the death of the original Groot in the first film, “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014). Rocket gathers the remaining branches, plants one in a pot — and a new Groot grows from it. Important: this is not a clone in the usual sense. James Gunn explained that this is the son of the original Groot — he has a different personality, although his abilities may be similar. This early stage is often simply called a “seedling.”
