Mount Aso (1,592m) is one of the largest active volcanoes on Earth, dominating the island of Kyushu in southern Japan. Its caldera is about 25 kilometres wide — among the biggest in the world — and so vast that towns, farms and pastures fit inside it. The volcanic complex has five peaks, and the active crater of Nakadake still steams today, watched by visitors at the rim.
