The **photosynthetic reaction center** is where light energy becomes chemical energy in purple bacteria. It was the first membrane protein whose structure was solved at atomic resolution, by Johann Deisenhofer, Robert Huber and Hartmut Michel, who shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it.
