A long, square-section measuring rod with a block-shaped end cap at each end. Each cap has a small hole in its end face, and the top of the rod is marked with a row of evenly spaced graduation notches. The decempeda (literally "ten feet") was the measuring rod of Roman surveyors, about ten Roman feet or roughly 2.96 m long, often with metal end fittings.
