A display model of a Roman groma. A tapered column rises from a round, stable base and carries a horizontal cross of four square arms at the top. From the end of each arm hangs a short rod with a teardrop-shaped plumb weight. The groma was the Roman surveyor's tool for laying out straight lines and right angles, used for roads, camps, towns and field divisions.
