Sakurajima (1,117m) is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, looming over Kagoshima Bay on the island of Kyushu, Japan. Once an island itself, it was joined to the mainland by lava flows from the colossal 1914 eruption — one of the largest in Japan's modern history. The volcano still sends ash plumes into the sky almost daily, and its twin peaks, Kitadake and Minamidake, dominate the local skyline.
