A small scout saucer posed on a display rod above a round base. The thick disc is lined all round its edge with raised porthole rings, the cockpit dome is divided by ribs into panels with a small cap on top, and two finned thruster pods project from the back of the craft, giving it a sense of speed. The phrase "flying saucer" took off after pilot Kenneth Arnold's widely reported sighting in June 1947, and through the 1950s the domed disc became the standard look for visitors from space in films…
