Vintage Postal Letter Scale with Dial, Desk Model

A model of an old dial-type postal scale. A round face with a numbered scale and a pointer is set on a short column, a flat round weighing pan sits on top, and the whole scale stands on a stepped rectangular base. Letter scales became common on post office counters and office desks after postage began to be charged by weight; Britain's uniform penny post of 1840, for example, priced letters by weight, and spring-dial scales like this one were widely used well into the twentieth century.
