The face of the emperor who changed the Roman world: the colossal head of Constantine the Great, about 2.5 metres tall in the original marble. Around 312–315, after his victory at the Milvian Bridge, Constantine was shown in an enormous seated statue in the great basilica beside the Roman Forum. Only the marble parts survive, the head, hands, feet and a knee, and since the 15th century they have stood in the courtyard of the Capitoline Museums, one of the best-known sights in Rome.
