A long rectangular storage chest with a flat lid, reinforced by vertical straps that run up the front and over the lid edge like iron bands. A square lock plate with a keyhole slot sits in the centre of the front, a ring handle is fixed to each end, and the chest stands on a low plinth. It is one solid piece with the lid closed. Chests were the main storage furniture in many ancient households. Romans kept clothing, linen and valuables in wooden chests (arcae), and metal bands, corner fittings…
